What do each of these Standards mean?

The USDA-NOP (NOP = National Organic Program) is the law that defines the legal meaning of "organic" food. This means these products are good enough to eat (although we do not recommend that you eat them). When you buy a product that is certified to the USDA-NOP standard and bears that seal, it means the ingredients and the final product all meet the "Organic" Food regulation and has been certified (every year!) by an organic certification agency that is accredited by the USDA. In order to achieve certification a product must contain 95% or more certified organic ingredients.

The California Organic Products Act of 2003 requires a minimum of 70% organic ingredients and requires that we as manufacturers are registered with the California Dept. of Health Services who oversee all USDA organic claims. On every product bearing our organic seal we clearly state the percentage of certified organic ingredients ranging between 75% and 87%. In some instances special ingredients were needed to maximize the full function and safety of these exceptional organic products. These ingredients are derived from sustainable sources like cultivated plants and eco-friendly processes, but because they are not food products, they cannot qualify under the NOP standards. While some ingredients may have chemical sounding names, they are in reality very close to their original natural source, and are derived through green-chemistry with minimal processing.
